Environment Management System is defined by ISO as : "part of the overall management system, that includes organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes, and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, and maintaining the environmental policy.

ISO-14000 family of standards for environmental management was launched to provide a practical tool-box to assist in the implementation of actions supportive to sustainable development.

It is an international voluntary standard for providing common frame work for managing environmental issues. The requirement of ISO-14000 is an integral part of the European Union’s Eco- Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).

IS0-14000 Family Standards helps organizations in following ways :
