Time to commit towards circular economy

In India, solid waste generation is the by-product of the Urbanization, rapid industrialization, population growth and migration from the country side, highly related with economic growth, degree of industrialization and consumption pattern and lavish lifestyle of urbanites. This has put pressure on the nation to deal with the management of ever increasing solid waste along with the contemplations of increasing resources efficiency.

With over 1,3 billion people and a GDP growth of 7% per year, India faces new challenges in terms of resources also it has become a necessity to control GHG emissions, waste generation and pollution as well as the erosion of natural capital. That is why the concept like circular economy provides an opportunity for India to be able to reach a long-term prosperous resource efficiency targets with a stable environment having least impact on climate change.

Circular Economy is a concept of waste to resources: Closing the loop & cradle-to-cradle approach. Resources in waste streams are reused as valuable inputs for creating the desired products rather than extracting new raw materials. Circular economy has an additional benefit as this concept not only reduces pressure on our resources but it also makes our planet green because as the resources are reused in the system which also signifies creating less emissions & pollution.

An approach towards the Circular Economy involving concerning ministries and authorities

  • MoEFCC/CPCB/SPCB/Local Municipal Corporation: To develop institutions that can produce skilled manpower for the business of circular economy (Involvement of international tutors)
